A Quick and Delicious Chocolatey Dessert
The best way to top off a cake? We like to add more butter, sugar, and chocolate.
This recipe is incredibly simple and delicious. It came to be a longstanding tradition in my family randomly and out of necessity, as most great inventions do. Once when my Grandma Barrie was making lunch for her farmer boys—my grandpa and uncles—they had to get back out to the farm so instead of waiting for the frosting to cool, she just poured it over the cake and so they could scarf it down and get back to work. See below for a pic of my handsome Grandpa Barrie. 🙂
Since then it has been a Barrie family recipe that no one needed to write down because everyone just knew it. But now, I’m giving it to you so your family can enjoy a fast and yummy dessert too. (We usually had it on our Sunday-night dessert rotation, which basically consisted of this or Hello Dollies.)
xo Enjoy!
P.S. Make sure you cut your piece of cake length-wise and pour the hot frosting on the inside for maximum frosting coverage.
P.P.S You can add a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a bit of whipped cream on the side to balance out the richness of the chocolate but I love the straight chocolate on chocolate with a glass of milk.

Rachel!! I remember you making this cake for all the roomies in college. It was love at first taste, and since then I have baked it myself, at home. This recipe is to die for! I’m contemplating making it for my son’s birthday party, as I prefer good flavor to a colorful but subpar cake.
Tosca! You are the best! I’m so happy you make this at home—you should definitely make it for your son’s bday!!
